#saVOGUE March ’17 cover girl Steph Yap, tries to style an outfit a modern Belle would wear, but ends up with something more boho chic than modern-day vogue
When Stepfen, a photographer I met on a recent shoot, contacted me about wanting to collab, I was stoked! But we both didn’t have a theme in mind, so he searched for nice places to shoot here in Manila. In his search, Stepfen found this goldmine of a neoclassical room. And as soon as I saw it, Beauty and the Beast came into mind — I could heard the violins of the “Tale as Old as Time” intro playing, but I imagined something more than the familiar ball gown.
That train of thought eventually became the concept for the fashion-film-slash-bts-video I made for the shoot.
With a denim blazer, with a rose patch, and of course, the signature chrome yellow gold of Belle’s gown — this was my attempt at styling a modern Belle. A modern princess wearing patent leather boots, ready to kick ass — ever just the same, ever a surprise. Even though this ensemble had more of a 70’s vibe than a modern-day look, I had lots of fun with the concept and styling of this outfit.
It was only as I was writing this blog post that it occurred to me that what I was wearing was a combination of both outfits of the Beauty and the Beast.
My denim blazer with the rose patch resembled the Beast’s royal blue tux with gold lining. And of course, the beautiful embroidered yellow top with sparkles was the ode to Belle’s gown.
Back when I was a kid, I always imagined myself as a Disney princess, but growing up, I realize that I — or maybe we humans in general — have more in common with the Beast rather than the princess. Someone filled with anger and resentment at things he cannot change, only searching for someone to love him wholly despite all that.
But I would like to be a Belle — someone who saw beyond one’s facade, understanding that his bitterness came from being a victim of circumstance. And showing him that we have a choice — to let circumstances break us… or come out stronger than ever.
Love can save us. That is the tale as old as time, true as it can be.
